In 2002, Venezuela renamed the holiday Dìa de la Resistencia Indìgena (“Day of Indigenous Resistance”) to recognize native peoples and their experience. In many Latin American nations, the anniversary of Columbus’ landing has traditionally been observed as the Dìa de la Raza (“Day of the Race”), a celebration of Hispanic culture’s diverse roots. Later, while serving as the governor of Hispaniola, he allegedly imposed barbaric forms of punishment, including torture. Upon arriving in the Bahamas, the explorer and his men forced the native peoples they found there into slavery. The image of Christopher Columbus as an intrepid hero has also been called into question. Warfare between Native Americans and European colonists claimed many lives as well. In recent decades, Native Americans and other groups have protested the celebration of an event that resulted in the colonization of the Americas, the beginnings of the transatlantic slave trade and the deaths of millions from murder and disease.Įuropean settlers brought a host of infectious diseases, including smallpox and influenza that decimated Indigenous populations. Columbus Day AlternativesĬontroversy over Columbus Day dates back to the 19th century, when anti-immigrant groups in the United States rejected the holiday because of its association with Catholicism. While Columbus Day is a federal government holiday meaning all federal offices are closed, not all states grant it as a day off from work. Roosevelt proclaimed Columbus Day a national holiday, largely as a result of intense lobbying by the Knights of Columbus, an influential Catholic fraternal organization.Ĭolumbus Day is observed on the second Monday of October. In 1892, President Benjamin Harrison issued a proclamation encouraging Americans to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ voyage with patriotic festivities, writing, “On that day let the people, so far as possible, cease from toil and devote themselves to such exercises as may best express honor to the discoverer and their appreciation of the great achievements of the four completed centuries of American life.” Taking pride in Columbus’ birthplace and faith, Italian and Catholic communities in various parts of the country began organizing annual religious ceremonies and parades in his honor. The first Columbus Day celebration took place in 1792, when New York’s Columbian Order-better known as Tammany Hall-held an event to commemorate the historic landing’s 300th anniversary. As a result, Columbus and his contemporaries assumed that only the Atlantic lay between Europe and the riches of the East Indies. The explorer crossed the Atlantic several more times before his death in 1506.ĭid you know? Contrary to popular belief, most educated Europeans in Columbus' day understood that the world was round, but they did not yet know that the Pacific Ocean existed. In March 1493, Columbus returned to Spain in triumph, bearing gold, spices and “Indian” captives. There, he established Spain’s first colony in the Americas with 39 of his men. Later that October, Columbus sighted Cuba and believed it was mainland China in December the expedition found Hispaniola, which he thought might be Japan. He views it as a personal slight when he fails to catch Marty Byrde or any of his associates. Petty's biggest fault is his inability to not take his work personally. He's also proven to be a complete hypocrite, having the audacity to chide Marty for using Petty's mother in order to get to him when he attempted to do the same thing with Rachel, manipulating her drug addiction in order to use her to get to Marty. Though nothing can truly explain his obsession with French avant-garde playwright Antonin Artaud. As such, this may explain why he cares (at least nominally) about Russ. He is a self referred “twink” and enjoys getting fucked by “bears” such as Russ. He also openly states his disgust and dislike for the people in the Ozarks several times. He also isn't above using people to get to his goals, like using Russ' closeted homosexuality or Rachel's substance abuse issues to turn them into informants. He is also casually cruel to people, even those he considers a friend like Agent Evans. He is self-righteous, arrogant, manipulative, and his drive to succeed borders on obsession. He died in the episode The Gold Coast.ĭespite being an FBI agent, Petty is shown to be not much better than the people he goes after. In fact, even a small spark can ignite the fumes and cause an explosion. One of the biggest dangers of starter fluid is that it can easily catch fire if it’s not used properly. While this can be helpful in getting your lawn tractor started on a cold day, it’s important to use it sparingly and never leave it unattended while the engine is running. It works by providing a quick burst of energy that helps the engine turn over and start up. Starter fluid is a highly combustible liquid that is used to help start internal combustion engines. But did you know that this seemingly innocuous substance can actually be quite dangerous? Here’s what you need to know about starter fluid and lawn tractors. If you’re like most people, you probably don’t think too much about your lawn tractor’s starter fluid. You only need a few seconds worth of spray – too much will flood the engine and make it difficult to start. Squeeze the can of starter fluid, spraying a small amount into the carburetor hole. Be careful not to get any fluid on your skin or in your eyes.Ĥ. Insert the straw from the can of starter fluid into this hole. You should see a small hole in the center of the carburetor body.ģ. Remove the cap from the carburetor and look inside. This is usually located near the engine, towards the back of the car.Ģ. This can be a tricky process, so it’s important to follow the steps carefully.ġ. If your car has been sitting for a while and won’t start, you may need to use starter fluid on the carburetor. If it doesn’t start after several attempts, you may need to clean or replace your spark plugs. If the engine starts, keep spraying until it runs smoothly on its own. Spray a few bursts of starter fluid into the carburetor throat while someone else cranks the engine over. Next, locate the spark plug wire and pull it away from the spark plug so there is no chance of sparking. Add about two ounces of starter fluid to the carburetor bowl and reattach the air intake screen. Remove the air intake screen and unscrew the cap on the carburetor bowl. There is also a small air intake screen on the side of the carburetor. The carburetor is usually located near the engine, and has a small bowl-shaped chamber with a float in it. To add starter fluid to your Craftsman riding lawn mower, first locate the carburetor. Starter fluid is a volatile, flammable liquid that helps get engines started by providing a quick burst of fuel. If your Craftsman riding lawn mower won’t start, you may need to add some starter fluid. Where to Spray Starter Fluid on Craftsman Riding Lawn Mower If it starts, let it run for a few minutes before turning it off so that the starter fluid can burn off completely. Then try starting your lawn mower as usual. Once you’ve located either the carb or intake manifold, remove any covers that are blocking access and spray a small amount of starter fluid into it. The intake manifold is usually located near the front of the engine. If your lawn mower has a fuel-injected engine, you’ll need to find the intake manifold and spray the starter fluid into that. On most lawn mowers, the carb is located behind the air filter. If you have a carbureted engine, you’ll need to locate the carburetor and spray starter fluid into the carb. The answer depends on the type of lawn mower you have. But where do you spray starter fluid on a lawn mower? If your lawn mower isn’t starting, you may need to use starter fluid to get it going. Where to Spray Starter Fluid on Lawn Mower If you’re unsure how much to use, err on the side of using less rather than more. Be careful not to overdo it, though, as too much starter fluid can damage your engine. If your engine still doesn’t catch, you may need to give it a little more starter fluid. Spray a small amount of starter fluid into this hole and then try starting your lawn mower again. Once you’ve located the carburetor, find the small hole that leads into it. You’ll want to remove the air filter first so that the fluid can reach the carburetor easily. On most riding lawn mowers, the best place to spray starter fluid is into the carburetor. Starter fluid is a quick and easy way to get your engine going, but it’s important to know where to spray it. If your riding lawn mower won’t start, you may need to add some starter fluid. The process is that you upload your music, and then anyone interested will make an offer. I started using Musosoup recently and it has proven useful for getting the music to people who are keen to promote it. You can even make special requests so that your music is the focal point of their posts!Ībove all, Submithub makes it very easy to discover and narrow down the outlets that are a good fir for you and your music. Here are Submithub's recommended strategies for social media coverage. More recently, Submithub allows you to submit to Instagram and TikTok influencers. In the process of selecting the outlets you would like to submit to, you have the option to filter down to blogs that are listed in Hype Machine, and that are part of Submithub's 'Really Good Bloggers' program. Submithub also has a cool feature where you can earn premium credits. The curators there are more incentivised to listen to premium submissions. Premium credits come with a guarantee of a listen and allow you to submit to more people. Submithub’s standard credits are free to use. The app allows you to submit to reviewers that might like to feature you on their blog, playlist, or channel. The site was developed and founded by Jason Grishoff. Submithub is a platform that connects you to music curators and social media influencers. The package includes guides on how to approach them alongside lots of handy music industry advice. It gives you access to a huge database of curators who want new music. The Indie Bible is a great resource for artists and managers. I would couple this with their 'premiere' option, which means that whichever blog says yes first, gets to be the first to share.Īny other blog after that can still choose to feature it, but only after the premiere has been and gone. If you're using Submithub, you can filter the choice of blogs to ones that are “Listed On Hype Machine”. You can check out the sites they index here: Hype Machine aggregates all the articles that feature each song and organises them into a single entry in its database. The more blogs that write about your song, the higher it can land on their chart. If you manage to get a feature on a blog that’s indexed by HM, your track will make it on its database. Hype Machine indexes music blogs and curators around the world. You can also download a FREE PDF version of this guide so you always have it to hand! Table of Contents In this article, I share with you some of my favourite ways to find bloggers, influencers, and playlisters who are looking for new music. Getting write-ups from established music blogs and magazines is akin to building your portfolio or résumé. How to find music blogs and playlists to submit to Overall, I feel the curriculum is worth the money. That being said, this program inspires our homeschool, more than it directs it. I always build to William’s interests, learning styles, and preferences, and involve him in final selection of our curricula. My teaching style is best defined as considerately structured. We find that content, as scheduled can be completed in just one or two days. In reality, the program is designed to be learner driven, containing opportunities and suggestions for exploration more than actual scheduled content. Honestly, I was expecting more structure in general. All other programming can be done in any sequence, which allows a lot of flexibility in scheduling. Luckily, the only elements of the curriculum that require weekly progression are the phonetic and mathematic lessons. I don’t imagine the suggested programming schedule is realistic for many families. Week 32 – The Differently Abled/Community Helpers. That being said, here’s the break down of the structure which does exist: I was anticipating stronger themes and have made a lot of changes to make the weekly readings a spring board for a unit study. For example, what I’ve titled “Thanksgiving,” she calls, “Innovation and Tradition.” Theme names are often very adult, and not as direct as my four-year-old would prefer. Sometimes other elements of the weekly schedule relate, but often times not. We have actually stretched this program over a 14 month timetable, so many topics will be stretched over two months for us.Įach week is loosely themed around weekly reading. It’s all we can do to keep my 18-month-old, out of one bin full of little pieces. These activities can be put out all at once or one at a time, depending on your learning space/learner needs. Each month/topic, contains four hand-on prompts. This add-on has separate book lists for each month/topic, none of which are spines. Here’s the break down: Monthly Math Inquiry Tables I find the scheduled math in the program misses the mark, and strongly suggest this add-on! For whatever reason, the creator didn’t include the table of contents or a topic list in the visual sample of this product. Monthly Math Inquiry Tables is a separate teacher guide, most ideal in hard copy form. Especially, since we have heavily modified the way the emotional intelligence is scheduled! They go along with the emotional intelligence portion of the program. Mindful Moments Badges are reminiscent of a sticker chart, if your learner likes that sort of thing. Program add-ons available for purchase and download: However, I think its good to dismiss unrealistic expectations as early as possible, when curricula shopping. In the end, the cost reflects an all-inclusive curriculum purchase, such as BookShark or Beautiful Feet. That’s not to say, compromises can’t be made, to be a bit more thrifty along the way. Additionally, materials for art, nature studies, and science, incur cost. The literature selections are relatively new publications, which many reviewers have found problematic in their community library system, or when trying to purchase used books. Weekly readings can also be purchased or borrowed from your local library. I estimate spines cost about $150, and we didn’t buy all of them. We purchased the bundle for just over $40. Add-ons to the program can be purchased separately, or in a bundle with the curriculum. The teacher guide alone is around $30, plus printing costs, if you want a hard copy. This review is for Level Pre-K: Curiosity & Character. Additionally, there are weekly list of suggested media, apps, and games. In the teacher guide, additional titles are listed if you desire to, or need to, substitute a weekly selection. The primary book list is public on the creators website and includes, program spines and weekly readers. The information is shared via a teacher guide, downloadable as a PDF. Torchlight is a fairly new, Socratic literature based secular curriculum. It’s nice to give back! I hope our experiences can help you make well informed decisions for your families future homeschooling adventures:) I read countless reviews while selecting homeschool curricula for our family. I would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a secluded getaway. I highly recommend the tasting menu.įinal thoughts on the St. The setting was very nice, overlooking the water. The food was very good, and while not cheap, much more reasonable. Sufi was located within the Punta Mita complex, but just outside the St. One restaurant that the concierge highly recommended served what she termed “Mexi-terranean” food. At one of the touristy places, the same beer was 30 pesos, or less than US$2.60. Regis was 85 pesos, approximately US$7.30. Just as a point of comparison, prices for a bottle of Pacifico at the St. We also visited the nearby Punta de Mita area for some scuba diving and cheaper dining options. They opened 3 bottles of Taittinger Brut with a sword, and distributed it to guests. At Punta Mita, they do this each Friday evening at the Altamira lobby where we checked in. One interesting experience we had was the traditional St. One evening we took advantage of another discount, 50% off margaritas at the Sea Breeze restaurant. Dining on property was very expensive, but simply out of convenience, we did so for several meals. There were several dining options available within the St. The spa was very nice, and as expected, very quiet. We both signed up for a 60 minute massage. Like many parts of the resort, there didn’t seem to be much business, which likely explains this discount. They mentioned that they were offering a 50% discount on all services for the next 2 days. We noticed information on various spa treatments on sale when speaking to the concierge, so my wife went to the spa to enquire as to their services. It was a nice area for running, but the humidity was heavy. There are also jogging trails around the complex. There was also a aerobics classroom and locker rooms. The fitness center was well equipped, and like many public buildings had a grass roof. The property is laid out with rooms in various buildings, typically containing up to 4 or so rooms each. Our room was in the Cielo group, facing the center pool area. I only had a brief conversation with the GM, but had nice chats with an assistant manager as well as the Butler manager. Many of the upper managers are very visible on property and want to ensure guests are satisfied. The butlers we worked with provided great friendly service, as did everyone else we interacted with. We didn’t really use our butler a lot, but it was nice to have someone just a phone call away. One day at one of the pools, there was never more than 3 other people there besides us. The occupancy rate must have been pretty low, as we rarely saw a lot of other people. This was just before one of the rains we had most evenings. Our room was on the ground floor, patio is in the center of picture. This is a view of the back of our building. (Sorry for the foggy lens, going from an air-conditioned room to humid Mexican air is tough on photography). View from patio towards Las Marietas pool and the beach. The bathroom contained a large bathtub, an excellent shower, plus an outdoor shower. The room itself was quite spacious, 2 TVs, a nice sitting area, plus a patio with a table, chairs and a lounge chair. |
